Vulnerable machines could be smarter. Today’s robots are not designed to be motivated to act in an intelligent way to avoid peril to themselves, which places limits on how intelligent they can be. They exist in a world without meaning, without existential stakes. The very things that can make human life so difficult and painful are the things that make us intelligent and resourceful in ways that today’s robots simply are not.
